Disinfection Byproducts
Compounds that can form when disinfectants such as chlorine react with natural organic matter in source water.
Disinfection byproducts form during water treatment when disinfectants react with organic material from catchments, rivers, reservoirs, or pipe networks.
Why it matters
Disinfection is essential because it prevents waterborne disease. Utilities manage byproducts by controlling disinfectant dose, removing organic material before disinfection, and monitoring treated water against Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Reducing exposure
Activated carbon filters can reduce many taste and odour issues linked to chlorinated water and can lower some disinfection byproducts. Reverse osmosis systems can also reduce a broad range of dissolved contaminants, depending on the system design and maintenance.
