Tasmania Tap Water Quality

Water quality data for 797 suburbs across 1 water utility in Tasmania

Water Sources

Tasmania benefits from the highest average rainfall of any Australian state, and its water supply reflects this relative abundance. The island’s drinking water comes almost entirely from surface sources — rivers, lakes, and purpose-built reservoirs fed by rainfall and snowmelt from the central highlands.

Hobart’s supply is drawn from the Derwent River catchment and several smaller reservoirs. Launceston sources its water from the South Esk and North Esk rivers, while Devonport, Burnie, and other north-west coast towns rely on local river intakes and small dams. The state has no desalination plants, as surface water availability has historically been sufficient.

Treatment Approach

TasWater, the state’s sole regulated water and sewerage utility, operates treatment plants across Tasmania. Most facilities use conventional treatment: coagulation, flocculation, filtration, and chlorine disinfection. Some larger plants employ UV disinfection as an additional barrier.

Fluoride is added in Hobart and several other population centres, though not universally across the state. Historically, some smaller Tasmanian communities received water with minimal treatment, but a major infrastructure investment program has progressively upgraded these systems.

Key Challenges

Legacy Infrastructure

Tasmania has faced long-standing challenges with ageing and undersized water infrastructure, particularly in smaller regional towns. Prior to the formation of TasWater in 2013, water services were managed by 29 separate councils with varying levels of investment and expertise. Consolidation has improved consistency, but upgrades to older systems are ongoing.

Catchment Management

Open catchments — those not closed to human activity — are used in many parts of Tasmania. Agricultural runoff, forestry operations, and recreational use can introduce contaminants, making robust treatment and monitoring essential.

Colour and Organic Matter

Tasmanian surface waters often carry naturally high levels of dissolved organic matter from buttongrass plains and eucalypt forests. This produces characteristic colour (measured as true colour units) and can lead to elevated disinfection by-product formation if not adequately managed during treatment.

Regulatory Framework

The Department of Health regulates drinking water quality in Tasmania under the Drinking Water Quality Guidelines. TasWater is regulated by the Tasmanian Economic Regulator for pricing and service, and must meet ADWG-aligned quality standards.

Infrastructure Highlights

TasWater operates over 50 water treatment plants and manages more than 4,000 kilometres of water mains across the state. A multi-year capital works program is systematically addressing treatment gaps in smaller communities.
